Short answer

Buy the PS5 Digital Edition if you already buy games online and have steady home internet. Buy the Disc Edition if you want to resell, swap or borrow games, or if your data is limited. In October 2026, Mascom International sells a new PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition at KSh 100,000. A new PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition costs KSh 110,000.

Both consoles play the same games at the same speed. The real difference is how you get your games, and what that costs you over the next few years.

Where each one wins

Upfront price: the Digital Edition, if you never want discs

On a like-for-like basis, the used Digital Edition at KSh 65,000 is KSh 7,000 below the used Disc Edition at KSh 72,000. That gap is roughly one new disc game.

The saving disappears if you change your mind later. Adding the official PS5 Disc Drive at KSh 17,000 brings a used Digital Edition to KSh 82,000. That is KSh 10,000 more than buying the Disc Edition from the start. A new Digital Edition plus the drive comes to KSh 117,000.

So the Digital Edition only saves money if you are sure you will stay download-only.

Game costs over time: the Disc Edition

A disc is something you own and can sell. Finish a game, sell it on, and part of your money comes back. Families can pass discs between cousins in Nairobi and Kisumu. Students sharing a hostel in Juja can rotate one copy between rooms.

A digital game is tied to your PlayStation Network account. You cannot sell it or lend the disc, because there is no disc. Over three or four years, that resale value adds up for anyone who buys new releases.

Disc games are also easy to price in shillings. In October 2026, Spider-Man 2 on disc is KSh 6,300 at Mascom, and Resident Evil Requiem is KSh 8,500. You pay once, in shillings, and walk out with the game.

Buying games online: the Digital Edition, with a catch

Digital buyers enjoy store sales, instant downloads at midnight, and no discs to scratch. That suits gamers who already shop the PlayStation Store.

The catch is the account region. Sony prices the store in the currency of the country your account was opened in. Gift cards only work if they match that region, and Sony does not let you change the region later. Gift cards are the usual way to top up without a bank card, so the region you choose decides which cards you can use. Pick your region carefully on day one.

Internet and data: the Disc Edition

Big PS5 games are heavy downloads. On Safaricom or Airtel home fibre, that is an overnight job. On mobile data bundles, one game can eat a month's budget.

A disc installs most of the game from the disc itself. You still need internet for updates and online play. Still, a household with limited data, or one in a town where fibre has not arrived, will spend far less on bundles with the Disc Edition.

Size and space: the Digital Edition, narrowly

The Digital Edition is 600g lighter and 16mm slimmer when lying flat. It fits a tight TV stand in a Kilimani studio or a hostel room shelf more easily.

That is a small difference. Both consoles are far smaller than the original 2020 PS5, and both fit a standard TV unit.

Upgrading a Digital Edition later

The Slim Digital Edition can take Sony's add-on disc drive at any time. You remove a side panel and plug the drive in. The PS5 then needs an internet connection once to pair the drive to the console. After pairing, discs play offline.

That makes the Digital Edition a reasonable choice if your budget is tight today. Just remember the combined price ends up higher than buying the Disc Edition outright.

Who should buy which

Buy the Digital Edition if you already have a PlayStation Network account with games on it, you have unlimited home fibre, and you rarely sell games. It also suits buyers who want a sealed, new console with a 12-month warranty, since the new Disc Edition is not on our shelves right now.

Buy the Disc Edition if you play sports titles yearly and sell last year's copy, share games with family or friends, or rely on data bundles. It is also the cheaper route to physical games than a Digital Edition plus the add-on drive.

Buy neither if you own a 4K TV in Westlands or Karen and want sharper visuals at high frame rates. The PlayStation 5 Pro, with a 2TB SSD, is KSh 190,000 new and also takes the add-on drive. If the budget stops near KSh 40,000, the PlayStation 4 Slim 1TB at KSh 36,000 still runs a large library of disc games. You can browse every model in our gaming consoles section.

Common questions

How much is the PS5 Disc Edition in Kenya in 2026?

In October 2026, Mascom International sells a used PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition for KSh 72,000, with a 6-month store warranty. It has a 1TB SSD and a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray drive. New Disc Edition units are not in stock at Mascom right now. The closest new option is the PS5 Slim Digital Edition at KSh 100,000 plus the official disc drive at KSh 17,000.

Can I add a disc drive to the PS5 Digital Edition later?

Yes. The PS5 Slim Digital Edition accepts Sony's official PS5 Disc Drive, which Mascom International sells new for KSh 17,000 in October 2026. You remove a side panel, plug the drive in, and connect the console to the internet once to pair it. The same drive also fits the PS5 Pro. It does not fit the original 2020 Digital Edition.

Does the PS5 disc drive need internet to work?

Only once. Sony requires an internet connection to pair the add-on disc drive with the PS5 the first time you set it up. After pairing, the drive plays discs without a connection. In Kenya, a short session on Safaricom or Airtel home fibre, or a phone hotspot, is enough for the pairing step.

Are PS5 disc games cheaper than digital games in Kenya?

It depends on the game and on store sales, but disc games keep resale value and digital games do not. In October 2026, Spider-Man 2 on disc costs KSh 6,300 at Mascom International. Once you finish a disc game, you can sell or swap it, which lowers its real cost. Digital games cannot be resold or lent.

Can I buy PS5 games from the PlayStation Store in Kenya?

Yes, through a PlayStation Network account. The store's prices and currency follow the country your account was registered in, and Sony does not allow you to change that region later. Gift card codes only work on accounts from the same region. Kenyan PS5 Digital Edition buyers should choose their account region carefully before buying any games.

Is a used PS5 from Mascom International safe to buy?

Mascom International's used PS5 Slim consoles are international imports, never deployed locally in Kenya, and tested before sale. Each one carries a 6-month store warranty covering hardware function. You can see and test the console at our Kimathi Street shop before paying. For a sealed unit with a 12-month warranty, the new PS5 Slim Digital Edition is KSh 100,000.
