The PS5 Disc Drive is in stock at Mascom International, priced at KSh 17,000, brand new and sealed. This is Sony's official detachable Ultra HD Blu-ray drive, made for the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition and the PlayStation 5 Pro, neither of which ships with a disc slot. Once fitted, the PS5 Disc Drive reads PS5 game discs, supported PS4 discs, 4K Blu-ray films, standard Blu-ray and DVD. You can see one attached to a console and ask questions at our store in the Old Mutual Building, First Floor Room 4, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD.
Built for digital console owners across Kenya who now want physical games, the PS5 Disc Drive fixes a common regret. Many buyers pick a digital console to save money, then find that downloading large games on a capped Safaricom or Airtel Kenya bundle eats data and time. Others receive disc games as gifts, or want to borrow titles from a cousin in Kisumu. The drive solves each case without replacing the console. Students at the University of Nairobi and Strathmore tell us it also turns their console into a film player for 4K Blu-ray nights in shared rooms.
Where most Nairobi electronics shops keep this drive only on special order, Mascom International holds the genuine PS5 Disc Drive on the shelf, sealed and backed by a 6-month warranty. Buyers throughout Kenya report that pairing takes only a few minutes over home Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot. It costs far less than trading in a digital console for a disc model. Pick up the PS5 Disc Drive at our Kimathi Street store, or order on WhatsApp and pay when it reaches you anywhere in the country.
Common Questions About the PS5 Disc Drive
How much is the PS5 Disc Drive in Kenya?
The PS5 Disc Drive costs KSh 17,000 at Mascom International in Nairobi CBD, brand new and sealed. The box includes the drive, a white cover, two horizontal stand feet and a user manual, with a 6-month warranty and pay-on-arrival delivery across Kenya. Added to the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition at KSh 100,000, the total reaches KSh 117,000. Added to the PlayStation 5 Pro at KSh 190,000, the full setup comes to KSh 207,000.
Is it cheaper to buy the PS5 Disc Drive or the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition?
If you are buying a console today, the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition at KSh 110,000 is KSh 7,000 cheaper than a PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition plus the PS5 Disc Drive, which together cost KSh 117,000. Both setups play the same discs with the same performance. The drive makes sense when you already own a digital console or a PlayStation 5 Pro, since replacing the console would cost far more than KSh 17,000. It also suits buyers who start digital and decide on discs months later.
Does the PS5 Disc Drive need internet to work in Kenya?
The PS5 Disc Drive needs an internet connection once, during first setup, to pair with your console. A home fibre line, a Safaricom or Airtel Kenya mobile hotspot, or Telkom data all work for this step. After pairing, discs play without a connection, though most new games still download a patch before first play. If you later move the drive to a different console, expect another online pairing step. Keep a small data bundle ready on setup day if your home has no fixed internet line.
Which consoles does the PS5 Disc Drive fit?
The PS5 Disc Drive fits the PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition, meaning the CFI-2000 model group including CFI-2100 units, and the PlayStation 5 Pro. It does not fit the original 2020 PS5 Digital Edition, which has no drive port, and the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition already has a drive built in. Check the model number on the sticker at the back of the console, or under Console Information in Settings, before ordering. Send a photo of it to Mascom International on WhatsApp and we will confirm the fit.
Can the PS5 Disc Drive play PS4 games and Blu-ray films?
Yes. The PS5 Disc Drive reads supported PS4 game discs as well as PS5 discs, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, regular Blu-ray and DVD movies. It will not read music CDs or home-burned discs. A PS4 collection built up over the years comes back into use, and many PS4 games run more smoothly on PS5 hardware. For films, a 4K Blu-ray disc gives a cleaner picture than most streaming and uses no data, which helps on a capped connection or a crowded evening on shared Wi-Fi.
Who should buy the PS5 Disc Drive, and who should skip it?
Buy the PS5 Disc Drive if you own a PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition or PlayStation 5 Pro and want physical games, PS4 discs or 4K films. Skip it if you are about to buy a new console: the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition costs less than a digital console plus this drive. Owners of the original 2020 PS5 Digital Edition cannot use it at all. PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 4 Slim owners already have a disc slot and gain nothing from it.
How do I attach the PS5 Disc Drive to my console?
Attaching the PS5 Disc Drive takes a few minutes at home, following Sony's printed guide in the box. With the console switched off and unplugged, remove its cover, connect the drive to the drive port, then fit the white cover from the box over the drive. Switch on, connect to the internet and follow the on-screen pairing steps. The two stand feet in the box keep the console steady lying flat with the drive attached. If you would rather have help, bring your console to our Kimathi Street store.
Is the PS5 Disc Drive worth it for a PlayStation 5 Pro owner?
Yes, if you want discs. The PlayStation 5 Pro ships without a drive, so the PS5 Disc Drive is the only official way to play physical games or 4K Blu-ray films on it. At KSh 17,000, it adds about 9% to the KSh 190,000 console price. Pro owners with large 4K TVs gain the most, since Ultra HD Blu-ray films show off that screen. Owners who only buy games through the PlayStation Store, paying with M-Pesa GlobalPay or a bank card, can safely skip it.
Technical Specifications
Core Function and Disc Support
- Ultra HD Blu-ray reader — plays 4K film discs holding up to 100GB, for sharper movies than most streaming services deliver.
- PS5 game disc support — install and play boxed PS5 games bought from a shop or borrowed from a friend.
- Supported PS4 game discs — older games on disc run on your PS5, so a past collection keeps its value.
- Standard Blu-ray and DVD playback — older film collections play too, upscaled for display on a 4K television.
- No audio CD or burned-disc support — music CDs and home-copied discs will not read, so plan around that limit.
- Games install to the console's SSD — the disc works as your proof of ownership while the game runs from fast internal storage.
- Disc must stay in the drive to play — keep the case handy, since the console checks for the disc when a game starts.
Compatibility
- PlayStation 5 Slim Digital Edition, CFI-2000 model group — the console this drive was designed around, including CFI-2100 units.
- PlayStation 5 Pro — the Pro has no built-in drive, and this is the official add-on that gives it one.
- Not compatible with the original 2020 PS5 Digital Edition — that model lacks the drive port, so check your model number first.
- Not needed on disc consoles — the PlayStation 5 Slim Disc Edition and the original disc PS5 already read discs.
- One-time online pairing — the console must connect to the internet the first time the drive is attached.
- Works offline after pairing — discs play without an internet connection once the first setup is complete.
Build and Design
- Detachable design — plugs into the console's drive port and can come off later if you sell the console or the drive.
- Adds about 16mm of height on the Slim — with the drive fitted, the digital console matches the Disc Edition's profile.
- White cover included — fits over the drive so the assembled console looks complete and matches its factory finish.
- Official Sony hardware — made by the console's maker, so it lines up with the port and housing as intended.
- Powered through the console — no separate adapter or cable, so it takes no extra socket on your extension board.
- Horizontal feet in the box — two plastic feet hold the console steady when it lies flat with the drive attached.
Inclusions
- Disc drive unit — the Ultra HD Blu-ray reader that connects to your console's drive port.
- White cover — the matching panel that closes over the drive once it is attached.
- Two plastic stand feet — for laying the console horizontally with the drive fitted.
- User manual — Sony's printed steps for removing the console cover, attaching the drive and pairing it.
- No game or film disc in the box — buy titles separately; Mascom International stocks PS5 games on disc.
- No vertical stand — Sony's vertical stand is a separate purchase if you want the console upright.
