The iPhone 18 Pro Max is now in stock in Nairobi. Mascom International sells it from KSh 244,000 for the 256GB eSIM-only model, and from KSh 250,000 for the version with a nano-SIM tray (October 2026). Apple announced the phone on September 9, 2026 and began sales on September 18. All three storage sizes, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, are on the shelf at our Kimathi Street store.
What is new
The biggest change is the camera. The 48MP main camera now has a variable aperture, a first for iPhone. It moves between f/1.48 and f/4, so you control background blur with the lens itself rather than software.
Inside is the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. Apple rates its 7-core GPU up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro in last year's model. A larger vapor chamber keeps the phone cooler during long games and 4K recording.
Battery life moves up as well. The SIM-tray iPhone 18 Pro Max carries a 5,391mAh cell, against 4,823mAh in the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple rates the eSIM-only model at up to 45 hours of video playback, two hours more than the SIM-tray version. A fast USB-C adapter returns about half the charge in roughly 15 minutes.
The Dynamic Island is smaller and can show three live updates at once. A new C2 modem uses 15% less energy than the one before it, according to Apple. The 6.9-inch display, the 4x telephoto lens and the colour choices of Black, Silver, Glacier and Burgundy round out the package.
The Kenya angle
Apple builds two versions of this phone, and Mascom International stocks both. The SIM-tray model accepts your existing Safaricom, Airtel or Telkom card and adds a second line on eSIM. The eSIM-only model is the version Apple sells in markets such as the US, Canada, Japan and the UAE.

For most buyers in Kenya, the SIM-tray model is the easier choice. A manager with a company Safaricom line keeps that card in the tray and runs a personal number on eSIM. Both ring on one handset. 5G works on Safaricom's network, with 4G as the fallback upcountry.
On our shelves, the closest rivals are last year's iPhone 17 Pro Max and Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra. The iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB costs KSh 206,000, which is KSh 44,000 less than the new SIM-tray model. The Galaxy S26 Ultra 256GB sells for KSh 129,000 with the same 6.9-inch screen size.
Who should care, and who can skip it
Buy it if you work from your phone all day and run short of battery by evening. Video makers, wedding photographers and content creators will value the variable aperture and the 1TB option for ProRes footage. People on an iPhone 14 Pro Max or older will feel the jump in speed and battery straight away.
Skip it if your iPhone 17 Pro Max still lasts a full day. The screen size and zoom are unchanged, so the upgrade is mostly battery, chip and camera control. If you want a smaller phone, the iPhone 18 Pro 256GB has the same chip and cameras for KSh 197,000.
Our take
This is a steady upgrade rather than a redesign. The bigger battery is the change most Kenyan buyers will notice day to day, especially through evening power cuts. For anyone with a work line, the SIM-tray 256GB model is the sensible default. The 512GB SIM-tray version, at KSh 10,000 more, is the better value for anyone who films a lot.
