The Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor delivers 19.5V at 2.31A through a 4.5x3.0mm barrel with a centre pin, and Mascom International has it in stock for KSh 1,900. It is a replacement adaptor for Dell laptops, brand new and sealed, built as a two-piece brick with an attached DC cable and a separate mains cord. The centre pin matters: it is the contact your Dell uses to read the adaptor's wattage before it starts charging. You can collect the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor at our shop on the first floor of Old Mutual Building, Kimathi Street, in Nairobi CBD.
Built for university students, accountants, sales teams and NGO field staff across Kenya, the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor solves a frustrating problem: a lost, frayed or failed charger that leaves a working laptop useless. Waiting for a part to be ordered can cost a week of work. This adaptor suits the lower-power Dell machines that shipped with a 45W charger, including many slim Inspiron, Vostro and XPS 13 models with the 4.5mm port. Customers across Nairobi tell us a second Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor, one kept at the office and one in the bag, saves them carrying a charger every day.
Unlike other electronics retailers in Kenya that sell unlabelled chargers off a hook, Mascom International states the exact voltage, current and pin size, then checks the match with you before you pay. Buyers throughout Kenya report that a correctly matched adaptor clears the charging warnings that generic tip-swap units often trigger. If your laptop originally came with a 65W adaptor, tell us, because our 65W 4.5mm version is the better fit and costs less. Walk in to test the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor on your own laptop, or order on WhatsApp for pay-on-arrival delivery anywhere in Kenya.
Common Questions About the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor
How much is the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor in Kenya?
The Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor costs KSh 1,900 brand new at Mascom International in Nairobi CBD. That price covers the adaptor brick with its attached 4.5mm cable, the detachable mains cord and a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Delivery is pay-on-arrival, so you hand over money only once the adaptor is in your hands. For comparison, the Dell 65W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor in our range sells for KSh 1,600, which is KSh 300 less, and it fits these same laptops.
Which Dell laptops does the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor fit?
The Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor fits Dell laptops that take a 19.5V supply through a 4.5x3.0mm barrel with a centre pin. That covers many slim Inspiron, Vostro and XPS 13 models built after Dell moved from its thick 7.4mm pin to the thinner 4.5mm one. Machines rated above 45W, such as gaming or workstation models, need more power than this unit gives. The quickest check is your old adaptor label: 19.5V and 2.31A with a 4.5mm tip is a direct match. Send a photo on WhatsApp to confirm.
Should I buy the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor or the 65W 4.5mm version?
Most buyers are better served by the Dell 65W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor, which costs KSh 1,600 against KSh 1,900 for this 45W unit. Both use the same 4.5x3.0mm barrel and 19.5V output; the 65W supplies 3.34A instead of 2.31A. A Dell laptop draws only the power it needs, so a 65W adaptor runs a 45W laptop safely with headroom to spare. The reverse does not hold: a 45W unit on a 65W laptop charges slowly or triggers a warning. Choose the 45W when you want to match your original label exactly.
Will the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor survive KPLC power cuts and surges?
The Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor handles ordinary outages without trouble, but a surge when KPLC power returns can damage any charger. When the grid drops, your laptop simply switches to battery and resumes charging once power comes back. The real risk is the spike that sometimes follows reconnection, especially in estates with unstable supply. Plug the adaptor into a surge protector or a UPS rather than straight into the wall. Unplug it during storms, and keep the brick off carpets so it can shed heat.
Who should buy the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor, and who should skip it?
Buy the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor if your Dell shipped with a 45W charger and you want an exact like-for-like replacement or a second unit for the office. It also suits anyone whose laptop label lists 19.5V and 2.31A. Skip it if your laptop needs 65W or more; the Dell 65W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor at KSh 1,600 is the right pick there. Skip it too if your Dell has a USB-C charging port, where the Dell 65W USB-C Laptop Adaptor fits instead.
Why does my Dell say the adapter type cannot be determined, and does this adaptor fix it?
That warning usually means your Dell cannot read the adaptor through the centre pin, because the pin is broken or the charger is a generic unit without one. The Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor has the centre pin, so a laptop rated for 45W can identify it and charge normally. If the warning continues with a new adaptor, the fault may sit in the laptop's charging port instead, which needs a repair technician rather than another charger. Testing at our counter shows which part is at fault.
Can I use my laptop while the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor is charging it?
Yes, the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor powers a 45W-rated Dell and charges its battery at the same time. Typing, browsing, email and video calls all run normally while plugged in. Under heavy loads, such as long video exports, a 45W laptop can draw close to the adaptor's full output, so the battery may fill more slowly. That is normal behaviour, not a fault. For office work in Westlands or a study session at the University of Nairobi library, the adaptor keeps pace comfortably.
Is the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor better than a cheap universal charger with swappable tips?
For a Dell laptop, a matched unit like the Dell 45W 4.5mm Laptop Adaptor is the safer choice. Many universal chargers ship with tips that lack the centre pin, so the laptop cannot identify them and may refuse to charge the battery. Others need you to set the voltage by hand, and a wrong setting can damage the machine. This unit is fixed at 19.5V with the correct 4.5x3.0mm tip, so there is nothing to adjust. It also carries a 6-month warranty from a walk-in shop in Nairobi CBD.
Technical Specifications
Core Function and Power Output
- 19.5V output — the standard voltage Dell uses across its 4.5mm barrel laptops, so the machine receives exactly the supply it expects.
- 2.31A peak current — the most this adaptor delivers, enough for a laptop designed around a 45W charger.
- 45W rating — 19.5 volts multiplied by 2.31 amps, matching the label on the 45W chargers these laptops originally shipped with.
- Charges the battery and runs the laptop together when the machine is rated for 45W, so you keep working while it charges.
- Runs on 240V mains through the detachable cord, plugged into a wall socket, extension board or surge protector.
- Replacement adaptor for Dell laptops, built to the same output figures as the charger it replaces.
- Brand new and sealed stock — no previous owner, no worn cable and no hidden damage from earlier use.
Compatibility With Dell Laptops
- 4.5x3.0mm barrel — 4.5mm outer width and 3.0mm inner opening, the slim tip Dell adopted in place of its thicker 7.4mm pin.
- Centre pin inside the barrel — carries the identification signal your Dell reads to confirm the adaptor's wattage before charging.
- Suits many slim Inspiron, Vostro and XPS 13 laptops that shipped with a 45W charger and a 4.5mm round port.
- Not for Dell laptops with a 7.4mm port, a USB-C charging port or a power rating above 45W.
- Check your old label: 19.5V and 2.31A with a 4.5mm tip means this unit is a direct match.
- Unsure of your model? Send the sticker under your laptop or a photo of the old adaptor on WhatsApp first.
- Laptops rated 65W may show a warning or charge slowly on this unit; the 65W 4.5mm version suits those better.
Build and Durability
- Two-piece design — a sealed brick with an attached DC cable, plus a separate mains cord you can replace on its own.
- Compact brick — sized to slip into a laptop sleeve or backpack pocket next to the machine it powers.
- Straight barrel tip — push it fully into the port until it seats, without bending the cable at the joint.
- The cable is most likely to break where it meets the brick and the tip, so wrap it loosely, never tightly.
- Plastic housing turns warm while charging, which is normal for any laptop adaptor; leave space around it for air.
- Detachable mains cord means a damaged wall cable is a small, cheap fix instead of a whole new adaptor.
- Keep the brick off beds and carpets, which trap heat and shorten the working life of any charger.
