Mascom International stocks the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor at KSh 1,800, brand new and ready to collect or dispatch. It outputs 16V at 4.5A through a 5.5x2.5mm barrel plug, giving older IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad models that draw more current the full supply they were built to receive. Sold as a replacement adaptor for ThinkPad laptops, the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor uses a two-piece design with a detachable mains cord. See it in person at Mascom International, Old Mutual Building, First Floor Room 4, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD, where the counter team can check it against your machine.
Built for engineers, IT support staff, bursars and long-time ThinkPad owners across Kenya, this adaptor answers a specific problem. Higher-draw ThinkPads paired with a weaker charger tend to charge slowly, stop charging while busy, or shut down once the battery runs flat despite being plugged in. That is a familiar story when someone borrows a 3.5A unit from a colleague. The Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor supplies up to 4.5A, enough for these machines to run and charge at once, whether they sit in a Mombasa port office or an Eldoret school bursary.
Where most Nairobi electronics shops offer one generic 16V charger and hope it works, Mascom International carries both the 3.5A and 4.5A versions, so the current matches your label. At Mascom International, we're seeing more ThinkPad owners choose the higher rating, because the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor covers lower-draw models too. Send a photo of your old label and we tell you whether the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor fits before you spend a shilling. Pick it up on Kimathi Street, or order on WhatsApp for pay-on-arrival delivery to any county, with same-day dispatch across Nairobi and its environs.
Common Questions About the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor
How much is the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor in Kenya?
The Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor is KSh 1,800 at Mascom International in Nairobi CBD, and every unit is brand new. For that price you receive the adaptor brick with attached DC cable, a detachable mains cord and 6 months of warranty cover for manufacturing defects. You pay only when it arrives, whether in Nairobi or upcountry. The lower-current Lenovo 56W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor costs the same, so the extra 1A of current comes at no added cost.
Which laptops need the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor?
The Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor is meant for older IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops labelled 16V and 4.5A. These are generally the fuller-sized, higher-draw models of the 16V era, where a faster processor, larger screen or extra drive bay pushed power needs up. They take a 5.5x2.5mm barrel plug. Model ranges overlap, so trust the label on the laptop base or old brick over the model family, and send a photo to Mascom International on WhatsApp for a fit check.
Can the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor run a ThinkPad rated 3.5A?
Yes, the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor safely runs a 16V ThinkPad rated 3.5A, because a laptop draws only the current it needs. Its 4.5A rating is a ceiling, not a push. The reverse is where trouble starts: the Lenovo 56W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor tops out at 3.5A and cannot keep a 4.5A machine running and charging under load. Both cost KSh 1,800 at Mascom International and share the same plug, so the 72W suits buyers unsure of their rating.
Will the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor charge the battery while the laptop is in use?
Yes, on a compatible 16V 4.5A ThinkPad, the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor supplies enough current to run the laptop and refill the battery together. That holds through spreadsheets, browsing, video calls and media playback. Charging still depends on the battery's own condition; a cell that is many years old may hold less charge or refuse to charge whatever adaptor you use. If the battery is worn out, the adaptor still runs the laptop directly from the wall.
How do I keep the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor working in Kenya's dust and heat?
Keep the brick off the floor and out of direct sun, because dust and heat shorten the life of any charger in Kenya. In dusty towns such as Garissa, Isiolo or Kitui, wipe the plug and the laptop's socket before connecting, since grit causes loose contact and sparking. In Mombasa's humid air, store the adaptor dry inside your bag. Plug it into a surge protector rather than the bare wall, so a spike when KPLC restores power never reaches it.
Can I share the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor between several office ThinkPads?
Yes, one Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor can serve any 16V ThinkPad with a 5.5x2.5mm socket rated 4.5A or less, so it works across mixed fleets. That makes it a practical spare for IT desks, school computer labs and repair benches that keep several older machines running. Label the brick so it returns to the right desk, and keep one per machine that leaves the office daily. Mascom International can confirm each model on WhatsApp before you buy several units.
Why does my ThinkPad stop charging with a borrowed 16V adaptor?
A borrowed 16V adaptor usually stops charging a ThinkPad because its current rating sits below what the laptop needs. A machine labelled 4.5A running on a 3.5A charger uses most of that supply just to stay on, leaving little or nothing for the battery. Some laptops also slow down to stay within the weaker supply. The Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor removes that shortfall with its full 4.5A rating. Check the borrowed unit's OUTPUT label; a 3.5A reading explains the problem.
Who should buy the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor, and who should skip it?
Buy the Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor if your ThinkPad label reads 16V with 4.5A, or if you run several 16V ThinkPads and want one adaptor for all of them. IT departments, schools and repair technicians gain the most. Skip it for any laptop rated 20V, where the Lenovo 65W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor applies, and for USB-C or slim rectangular-tip models. If your only ThinkPad reads 3.5A and you want an exact match, the Lenovo 56W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor serves equally well.
Technical Specifications
Core Function and Current Delivery
- 16V DC output — matched to the supply rating printed on the base of older IBM-era and early Lenovo ThinkPad laptops.
- 4.5A current rating — 1A more than the 56W version, giving higher-draw ThinkPads enough current to run and charge together.
- 72W total output, from 16V times 4.5A — the power class that matches laptops labelled 16V 4.5A.
- Headroom for heavier work — reports, diagnostics software or media playback run without the battery draining while plugged in.
- Runs lower-draw 16V ThinkPads too — a laptop rated 3.5A simply takes the smaller current it needs from this adaptor.
- Accepts 240V wall power through its mains cord, working from a standard socket, extension board or surge protector.
- Brand new replacement adaptor for ThinkPad laptops, sold with a 6-month Mascom International warranty.
Compatibility and Fit
- 5.5x2.5mm barrel connector — the round plug is 5.5mm across with a 2.5mm opening, matching these 16V ThinkPad sockets.
- Intended for older IBM and Lenovo ThinkPad laptops whose base label or original adaptor reads 16V and 4.5A.
- Also suitable for 16V ThinkPads rated 3.5A, since a higher current rating never forces extra current into the laptop.
- Unsuitable for 20V Lenovo laptops; those need the Lenovo 65W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor with the same plug size.
- Unsuitable for USB-C ports, slim rectangular Lenovo tips and other brands, even if a round plug appears to fit.
- Fit check by WhatsApp photo — Mascom International confirms the match from your laptop model or old label before dispatch.
Build and Handling
- Two-piece construction — the brick sits between a fixed laptop lead and a detachable cord running to the wall socket.
- Separate mains cord — a frayed or lost wall cord is a cheap swap rather than a reason to buy a whole new adaptor.
- No internal fan — the brick runs silently, so place it where air moves freely instead of under cushions or papers.
- Careful storage — coil the cable in loose loops, because sharp bends where the lead meets the plug cause most cable failures.
- Unused stock — fresh plug contacts and an undamaged cable, unlike second-hand chargers recovered from retired machines.
- Bag-friendly size — fits a laptop bag's accessory pocket for the daily trip between home, office and client sites.
Inclusions and Support
- Adaptor brick with fixed DC cable and 5.5x2.5mm barrel plug, ready to connect to a compatible 16V ThinkPad straight away.
- Detachable mains power cord for the wall side of the brick; WhatsApp confirms the plug type before dispatch.

- Option to test the adaptor on your own ThinkPad at the shop counter before buying, and see it charge in front of you.

Package Contents
The Lenovo 72W 5.5mm Laptop Adaptor comes as two parts: the brick with its permanently attached DC cable and 5.5x2.5mm barrel plug, and a detachable mains cord linking the brick to the wall. Nothing else is needed to power a compatible 16V ThinkPad. Wall sockets in Kenya follow the 3-pin UK pattern, and the plug type on the mains cord can be confirmed on WhatsApp before the order leaves our shop.
Warranty
