WD Black SN850P | 1TB Storage | Officially Licensed for PS5 | PCIe Gen4 NVMe | Heatsink Included
Add room for a bigger console game library without deleting favourites, using a drive that slots straight into the expansion bay.
Condition: New
Note: price and availability are subject to change without prior notice
WD Black SN850P 1TB is available at Mascom International for KSh 34,000, brand new and sealed, an officially licensed PS5 expansion drive with a factory-fitted heatsink. Made by Western Digital, the WD Black SN850P uses a PCIe Gen4 NVMe interface and the M.2 2280 size that the console's expansion slot accepts. Sequential reads reach up to 7,300MB/s and writes up to 6,300MB/s on this 1TB model, so PS5 games load and play straight from it. You can see the WD Black SN850P 1TB at our store in the Old Mutual Building, First Floor Room 4, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD.
Built for PS5 gamers across Kenya who keep hitting the storage full warning, the WD Black SN850P solves a problem most owners meet within months. Modern games are large, and each update adds more. Deleting a title means downloading it again later, which costs hours on a slow line or a big slice of your Safaricom or Airtel Kenya data bundle. With the WD Black SN850P installed, you keep EA Sports FC, Call of Duty and your open-world games ready at once. Customers across Nairobi tell us it ends the weekly argument at home over which game has to go.
Unlike many electronics retailers in Kenya that push unbranded Gen4 drives with loose clip-on coolers, Mascom International stocks the WD Black SN850P with PlayStation's official licence, so fit and speed are settled before you open the console. At Mascom International, we're seeing more PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Pro owners upgrade storage instead of juggling installs every weekend. Pay with M-Pesa when the drive reaches you, anywhere in the 47 counties, or walk in on Kimathi Street and we will show you the sealed box before you buy.
Common Questions About the WD Black SN850P
How much is the WD Black SN850P 1TB in Kenya?
The WD Black SN850P 1TB costs KSh 34,000 brand new and sealed at Mascom International on Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD. That price includes the fitted heatsink, a 6-month Mascom International warranty and pay-on-arrival delivery to all 47 counties, so you pay only after checking the sealed box. The 2TB version of the same drive sells for KSh 45,000, a KSh 11,000 step up. Per gigabyte, the 1TB works out to about KSh 34, against about KSh 22.50 on the 2TB.
Should I buy the WD Black SN850P 1TB or the Verbatim Vi7000G 1TB for my PS5?
The WD Black SN850P 1TB costs KSh 3,000 more than the Verbatim Vi7000G 1TB at Mascom International, and that gap buys an official PlayStation licence and faster writes. The WD reads at up to 7,300MB/s and writes at up to 6,300MB/s, while the Verbatim reads at up to 7,000MB/s and writes at up to 5,500MB/s. The WD is also rated for 600TB written against 500TB on the Verbatim. Pick the WD for the licensed drive with more headroom. Pick the Verbatim if saving KSh 3,000 matters more to you.
Will the WD Black SN850P fit a PlayStation 5 Slim or PlayStation 5 Pro?
Yes, the WD Black SN850P fits the M.2 expansion slot in the original PS5, the PlayStation 5 Slim and the PlayStation 5 Pro, in disc and digital editions alike. Its heatsink was redesigned for that slot, so it sits under the console's slot cover without trimming or swapping parts. After you fit it and switch on, the PS5 prompts you to format the drive. The console then lets you install games to it or move titles across from internal storage. It does not work in a PS4, which has no M.2 slot.
Is the WD Black SN850P safe during KPLC power cuts and hot Kenyan afternoons?
The WD Black SN850P handles Kenyan conditions well, with an operating range of 0°C to 85°C and a heatsink that draws heat away during long sessions. A warm afternoon in Mombasa or Kisumu sits well inside that range. Power cuts are the bigger risk, because a KPLC outage in the middle of a game install or copy can corrupt that download. Plug the PS5 into a UPS or surge protector, and if power drops mid-install, restart the download from the game library. Keep the console off the floor in dusty rooms.
Who should buy the WD Black SN850P 1TB, and who should skip it?
The WD Black SN850P 1TB suits PS5 owners who keep a handful of big games in rotation and want an official, plug-in fix for a full console. It also suits gamers on capped data who would rather keep titles installed than download them again. Skip it if you own a PS4, since that console has no M.2 slot. Collectors who want a whole library installed at once should look at the WD Black SN850P 2TB at KSh 45,000. If you mostly keep older PS4 games, a USB external drive is the cheaper fit.
Can I play PS5 games directly from the WD Black SN850P, or only store them?
You can play PS5 games directly from the WD Black SN850P, exactly as you would from the console's internal storage. That is the key difference from a USB external drive, which can hold PS5 games but must copy them back inside before you play. With sequential reads up to 7,300MB/s, the WD Black SN850P keeps load screens short in large open-world titles. You can also set it as the default install location, so new downloads go straight to it and the internal drive keeps room for system updates and captures.
What does officially licensed for PS5 mean on the WD Black SN850P?
Officially licensed means the WD Black SN850P was made under a PlayStation licence and carries the PlayStation logo on its heatsink. In practice, it tells you the drive's size, heatsink height and Gen4 speed were designed around the PS5 expansion slot, so you skip the guesswork of measuring a generic drive. Buyers throughout Kenya report that this certainty is the main reason they choose it over cheaper unbranded drives. The licence does not change the Mascom International warranty, which stays at 6 months.
Can I move the WD Black SN850P 1TB to a gaming PC later?
Yes, the WD Black SN850P 1TB also works in desktop PCs with an M.2 2280 M-key slot running Windows 8.1, 10 or 11. That makes it a safe buy if you plan to build a gaming PC later. Check that your motherboard has clearance above the slot, because the heatsink adds height compared with a bare drive. Most slim laptops lack that clearance, so treat it as a console and desktop upgrade only. Moving it means reformatting, so back up your saves to PlayStation Plus cloud storage or a USB drive first.
Technical Specifications
Core Function
- Internal NVMe solid state drive for the PS5 expansion slot — adds 1TB of game space alongside the console's own built-in storage.
- PCIe Gen4 x4 interface — four high-speed data lanes, the same connection type Sony built the PS5 expansion slot around.
- Plays PS5 games directly from the drive — no copying titles back to internal storage before you start a gaming session.
- Can be set as the default install location — new game downloads and patches land on it automatically without manual moving.
- Factory-fitted heatsink — a metal cooler that keeps the drive at a steady working temperature through long evening sessions.
Performance
- Sequential read up to 7,300MB/s — how fast large game files stream off the drive, which cuts load screens in open-world games.
- Sequential write up to 6,300MB/s — speeds up fresh game installs and moving big titles across from the console's internal storage.
- Random read up to 800K IOPS — handles thousands of small file requests per second, which games make constantly while loading levels.
- Random write up to 1,100K IOPS — keeps patches, updates and save data quick even when many small files change at once.
- Endurance rated at 600TB written — installing 100GB of games every single day would take about 16 years to reach it.
Compatibility
- Officially licensed for PS5 — made under PlayStation's licence, with the PlayStation logo printed on the heatsink for easy identification.
- Fits the M.2 expansion slot in the original PS5, PlayStation 5 Slim and PlayStation 5 Pro, both disc and digital editions.
- Also works in desktop PCs with an M.2 2280 M-key slot — a second life for the drive when you build a gaming rig.
- Supports Windows 8.1, Windows 10 and Windows 11 — the PC operating systems Western Digital lists for this drive.
- Not compatible with PS4 or Xbox consoles — the PS4 has no M.2 slot, and Xbox uses its own proprietary expansion cards.
Build
- M.2 2280 form factor — 22mm wide and 80mm long, the standard stick size that the PS5 expansion slot is designed to take.
- Overall size about 80 x 24.3 x 9.9mm with the heatsink — low enough to sit neatly under the PS5 slot cover.
- Weighs about 30.4g with the heatsink attached — the cooler adds heat control without adding noticeable bulk inside the console.
- Operating temperature 0°C to 85°C — comfortably covers warm rooms and consoles running several hours of gaming at a stretch.
- Storage temperature -40°C to 85°C — safe to keep or ship through hot and cold conditions before you install it.
Inclusions
- The SSD arrives with its heatsink already attached — no thermal pads, clips or brackets to fit yourself before installation.
- Western Digital product documentation sits inside the sealed retail box alongside the drive, covering installation and safety information.
- No screwdriver included — the PS5 slot cover and retaining screw need a small Phillips screwdriver from your own toolbox.
- No cables needed — the drive draws both power and data straight from the M.2 slot once it is screwed in place.
- No software disc required — the PS5 formats the drive itself the first time the console starts with it fitted.
Package Contents
The sealed WD Black SN850P 1TB box holds the drive itself with its PlayStation-branded heatsink already fitted, plus Western Digital's printed product documentation. There are no cables, adapters or brackets, because the drive takes power and data straight from the PS5's M.2 slot. A small Phillips screwdriver is needed to open the slot cover and is not in the box. Ask us on WhatsApp for a photo of the sealed box in stock before you order.
