Lenovo ThinkPad X240 | Intel Core i5 4th Gen | 8GB RAM | 256GB SSD | 12.5-inch Display
An affordable, hard-wearing work machine for first-time buyers who need dependable typing and browsing on a tight budget.
Condition: Used
Note: price and availability are subject to change without prior notice
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 is available at Mascom International for KSh 19,000, with an Intel Core i5 4th Gen processor, 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. It comes from our used stock: a lightly used international import in clean used condition, never deployed locally in Kenya. The processor is typically a Haswell dual-core chip such as the i5-4300U or i5-4200U. At 12.5 inches, the screen keeps the laptop compact, and the body starts at about 1.31 kg. You can examine the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 in person at Old Mutual Building, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD.
Designed for university students, cyber café owners, receptionists and small shop owners, the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 handles assignments, invoices, email and online forms. Many first-time buyers face a hard choice between a slow new budget laptop and an expensive business model. The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 offers a middle path: a business-class keyboard, a fast SSD and a sturdy frame at an entry price. Its Power Bridge system pairs a built-in battery with a removable rear pack, which helps during load-shedding evenings in Eldoret or Mombasa, when the socket goes quiet.
Where most Nairobi electronics shops push unknown laptop brands at this price, Mascom International offers a tested ThinkPad with a written warranty. At Mascom International, we're seeing students from JKUAT and Kenyatta University pick the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 as a first laptop that will last through their course. The spill-resistant keyboard and MIL-STD-810G tested frame stand up to hostel life, dusty campus paths and long commutes on crowded matatus between home and lectures. Stop by our Kimathi Street store to try the Lenovo ThinkPad X240, or order on WhatsApp and pay only when it arrives.
Common Questions About the Lenovo ThinkPad X240
How much does the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Core i5 cost in Kenya?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 Core i5 with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD costs KSh 19,000 used at Mascom International in Nairobi CBD. The price covers a tested compatible charger and cord, a 6-month Mascom warranty on hardware functionality, and pay-on-arrival delivery across all 47 counties. There is no retail box with used stock. For KSh 1,000 more, the Lenovo ThinkPad X250 in this batch steps up to a 5th Gen processor with better graphics.
Is this Lenovo ThinkPad X240 used or refurbished, and what is the difference?
This Lenovo ThinkPad X240 is sold as used, meaning it is a carefully maintained import that we test but do not rebuild. A refurbished laptop is restored and certified by its manufacturer or a named repair workshop, often with new parts. Our used units are checked for screen, keyboard, ports, charging and battery health before sale. Ports, keyboard layout and battery health vary between units, so confirm the specific Lenovo ThinkPad X240 on WhatsApp, and we will describe it plainly.
Should I choose the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 or the Lenovo ThinkPad X250?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 and Lenovo ThinkPad X250 share almost the same body, ports and Power Bridge battery design. The difference is inside: the Lenovo ThinkPad X250 uses a 5th Gen Core i5 with Intel HD 5500 graphics, while the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 uses a 4th Gen chip with HD 4400 graphics. At Mascom International they cost KSh 20,000 and KSh 19,000. Choose the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 to save money on pure office work; choose the Lenovo ThinkPad X250 for slightly quicker everyday performance.
Will the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 work on Kenyan internet and through power outages?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 connects to Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom home routers and phone hotspots over Wi-Fi, and to office networks through its Ethernet port. During KPLC outages it keeps running on its two batteries, internal and rear, so open documents stay safe. A spare charged rear battery can be swapped in without shutting down. Use the supplied charger with a surge protector in areas where power returns with spikes, since that protects both the charger and the laptop.
Who is the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 a good fit for, and who should avoid it?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 is a good fit for students, clerks and small business owners who need a sturdy laptop for documents, browsing and video calls at KSh 19,000. It rewards people who type a lot. Avoid it if you need Windows 11, photo or video editing, or modern games, since a 4th Gen chip is now old. Buyers who want more speed should look at the Lenovo ThinkPad X280 or Dell Latitude 7390 in this batch.
What Windows version does the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 run?
Most Lenovo ThinkPad X240 units of this age run Windows 10 Pro, as its 4th Gen processor is not officially supported for Windows 11. Windows 10 still runs Microsoft Office, Google Docs, KRA iTax, eCitizen and online banking in a current browser. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 security updates in October 2025, so keep your browser and antivirus up to date. Ask our team on WhatsApp which version is installed on the unit you want.
How many hours does the Lenovo ThinkPad X240 battery give?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 battery life depends on the rear pack fitted and on its current wear. Lenovo rated about 8.7 hours with the internal 23.5Wh battery plus a 3-cell rear pack, and longer with the 6-cell packs, all measured when new. Used batteries deliver less than these figures, often noticeably so. Our team tests each unit and shares a battery health report on WhatsApp, so you know what to expect before you order. A replacement rear pack is a cheap way to restore runtime later.
Can I add more memory to the Lenovo ThinkPad X240?
The Lenovo ThinkPad X240 has one memory slot and supports up to 8GB of DDR3L, which is what this unit already carries. That means memory is maxed out, and further gains come from software choices rather than hardware. Storage is more flexible: the 2.5-inch SATA bay accepts a larger SSD if 256GB fills up. Buyers who expect to need 16GB later should consider the Lenovo ThinkPad X280 16GB version, also stocked by Mascom International.
Technical Specifications
Processor
- Intel Core i5 4th Gen — the Haswell family, typically a chip such as the i5-4300U or i5-4200U.
- Two cores, four threads — runs Word, a browser and a music app side by side for office tasks.
- Ultra-low-voltage U-series design — keeps heat and fan noise down during long study sessions.
- Turbo boost — briefly raises clock speed when you open a big file, then slows down to save power.
- Intel vPro on i5-4300U units — lets company IT teams manage laptops remotely across a branch network.
Memory
- 8GB RAM — the full amount this model supports, enough for about a dozen browser tabs plus Office.
- DDR3L memory — a low-voltage type that helps the battery last longer than standard DDR3.
- One memory slot — 8GB is the factory limit, so no further memory upgrade is possible.
- Steady multitasking — switching between Excel, email and WhatsApp Web stays smooth for office loads.
- Background tasks — antivirus and cloud sync run quietly without slowing the main app you are using.
Storage
- 256GB SSD — holds Windows, Office, course notes and roughly 25,000 phone photos at about 3MB each.
- Solid-state drive — cold starts take seconds instead of the minute an old hard drive needed.
- Standard 2.5-inch SATA bay — a common drive size, making a larger SSD simple to fit later.
- M.2 slot inside — can hold a mobile broadband card or small drive, depending on the configuration.
- Removable and upgradable — your data drive can be moved to a new laptop when you upgrade.
Display
- 12.5-inch screen — small enough for a hostel desk or a crowded library table.
- Resolution varies by unit — Lenovo offered HD and FHD panels, so confirm the screen on WhatsApp.
- Anti-glare coating — reduces reflections from bright windows and overhead lighting.
- Touch versions exist — Lenovo built some units with multi-touch, so ask whether your unit has it.
- External displays — VGA and Mini DisplayPort connect projectors and monitors for presentations.
Graphics
- Intel HD Graphics 4400 — built into the processor and shares system memory to save power.
- Video playback — plays YouTube, Netflix and recorded lectures at full HD.
- Video calls — handles Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams for online classes and client calls.
- Three independent displays — Lenovo supports the laptop screen plus two external monitors at once.
- Limits — not suitable for modern games, 3D design or heavy video editing.
Battery
- Power Bridge design — a built-in 3-cell 23.5Wh battery paired with a removable rear battery.
- Rear battery options — Lenovo shipped 3-cell 23.5Wh, 6-cell 47.5Wh and 6-cell 72Wh packs.
- Swap without shutting down — the internal battery holds the load while you change the rear pack.
- Rated up to 17.4 hours when new — with the 72Wh pack; used batteries hold less charge.
- Tested before sale — ask on WhatsApp for your unit's rear pack size and battery health report.
Build and Ports
- MIL-STD-810G tested — Lenovo tested the build for shock, vibration, dust and temperature extremes.
- About 19.9 mm thick — weighs from about 1.31 kg, depending on the rear battery fitted.
- Two USB 3.0 ports — one stays powered while the laptop sleeps, so you can charge a phone.
- Ethernet, VGA and Mini DisplayPort — covers wired networks, older projectors and modern monitors.
- 4-in-1 card reader and spill-resistant keyboard — reads SD cards and survives small spills.
