HP Pro Tower 290 G9 | Intel Core i5-12400F | 8GB RAM | 512GB SSD | 1GB Graphics Card | DOS | CPU Only | B70U6AT
Six-core desktop muscle for cyber cafés, design studios and busy finance departments
Condition: New
Note: price and availability are subject to change without prior notice
HP Pro Tower 290 G9 with an Intel Core i5-12400F is now available at Mascom International for KSh 94,000. This brand new HP Pro Tower 290 G9, part number B70U6AT, has had its processor upgraded to the 6-core, 12-thread i5-12400F before sale. It carries 8GB of RAM, a 512GB NVMe SSD and a 1GB dedicated graphics card. The unit ships with DOS and the price covers the CPU tower only, which suits offices that already own working monitors and want faster machines behind them. Collect it from Old Mutual Building, First Floor Room 4, Kimathi Street, Nairobi CBD.
The HP Pro Tower 290 G9 solves a common problem for Kenyan businesses: entry desktops that choke once staff open large Excel files, run Sage or QuickBooks, and keep twenty browser tabs alive. The i5-12400F boosts to 4.4GHz across six full performance cores, so those workloads stay smooth. Cyber café operators on Moi Avenue, accountants preparing KRA returns and university students editing assignments all benefit. Because the desktop chip is rated at 65W, a decent UPS still carries the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 through short Kenya Power outages.
Unlike traditional electronics retailers in Kenya that sell assembled clones, Mascom International supplies a genuine HP commercial tower with HP BIOS security and a proper business chassis. The HP Pro Tower 290 G9 sits between our Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 30t Gen 5 at KSh 77,000 and our Core i5-14500 monitor bundle at KSh 115,000. Customers across Nairobi tell us this configuration is the sweet spot for staff who outgrew Core i3 machines but do not need a new screen. Visit our store to test the HP Pro Tower 290 G9, or order with pay-on-arrival delivery.
Common Questions About the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 with Core i5-12400F
What does processor upgraded mean on this HP Pro Tower 290 G9?
This HP Pro Tower 290 G9 B70U6AT was fitted with the Intel Core i5-12400F before sale, an upgrade over its standard factory processor. The machine is brand new and has not been used by anyone. The upgrade moves you to six performance cores and twelve threads, which is a clear step up for multitasking in finance, design and busy customer-facing roles. Because the F-series chip has no built-in graphics, a 1GB dedicated card was added so a monitor can connect.
Why does the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 need a 1GB graphics card?
The Intel Core i5-12400F inside this HP Pro Tower 290 G9 has no integrated graphics, so it cannot send a picture to a monitor on its own. The 1GB dedicated graphics card solves that and handles display output for office work, video playback and web systems. Always plug your monitor into the graphics card ports, not the motherboard HDMI or VGA. Those motherboard ports stay inactive with this processor, which surprises many first-time buyers, so our team checks the connection with you at collection.
Is the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 with i5-12400F worth KSh 94,000 in Kenya?
Yes, if your staff run heavy spreadsheets, accounting software or many browser tabs daily, the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 at KSh 94,000 earns its price. The i5-12400F has six full performance cores reaching 4.4GHz, noticeably faster than low-power Core i3 chips in multi-threaded work. You also get a business chassis with two memory slots, two M.2 slots and two 3.5-inch bays. That expansion room means the machine keeps up for years rather than months, protecting the investment for a growing business.
HP Pro Tower 290 G9 i5-12400F vs Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 30t Gen 5, which is better?
The HP Pro Tower 290 G9 i5-12400F is the stronger performer, while the Lenovo ThinkCentre neo 30t Gen 5 at KSh 77,000 is cheaper and uses less power. The Lenovo's i3-1315U has two performance cores; the i5-12400F has six, plus a dedicated graphics card. For reception desks and basic data entry, the Lenovo saves you KSh 17,000. For finance teams, design interns and cyber cafés serving many customers, the HP handles the heavier load without the waiting that frustrates staff and customers.
Can the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 handle graphic design or light editing?
Yes, the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 with i5-12400F manages Canva, Photoshop on typical files, CorelDRAW posters and 1080p video trims. Its twelve threads speed up exports and filters compared with quad-core chips. The limit is the 1GB graphics card and 8GB of RAM, so upgrade to 16GB first if you edit daily. Printing shops along Luthuli Avenue and small studios in Kilimani use this class of machine for posters, flyers and branding work every day.
How does the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 handle power cuts in Kenya?
Connect the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 to a UPS and you can save work and shut down cleanly when Kenya Power trips. The i5-12400F is rated at 65W base power, and office workloads rarely push it far beyond that. A standard 1000VA or 1500VA line-interactive UPS gives enough time to finish a transaction or close a file. HP's power supply supports active power-factor correction, which copes better with the voltage dips common in older Nairobi buildings and upcountry towns.
Can I upgrade the RAM and storage on the HP Pro Tower 290 G9?
Yes, the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 has two DDR4 memory slots supporting up to 64GB in total. Adding a second 8GB module brings you to 16GB in dual-channel mode, which is the best first upgrade. Storage expands through a second M.2 slot and two 3.5-inch bays, so you can add a 1TB or 2TB hard drive for archives. Mascom International stocks compatible memory and drives and can fit them when you collect, so you leave with the machine ready for heavier work.
Who should buy the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 i5-12400F, and who should skip it?
Buy the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 i5-12400F if you already own a monitor and need solid six-core performance for finance, design or a busy cyber café. Skip it if you need Wi-Fi out of the box or want a complete desk set. For that, the HP Pro Tower 290 G9 PCI with Core i7-13700 includes Wi-Fi and a 22-inch monitor. Buyers wanting a screen at a lower price should consider the Core i5-14500 bundle with its 21.45-inch HP monitor.
Technical Specifications
Processor Architecture and Real-World Speed
- Intel Core i5-12400F with 6 cores and 12 threads runs several demanding programs side by side without stalling.
- Base clock of 2.5GHz rising to 4.4GHz boost handles quick bursts like opening large workbooks or exporting reports.
- All six cores are full performance cores, keeping speed consistent under sustained load such as long spreadsheet recalculations.
- 18MB of Intel cache keeps frequently used data close to the cores, speeding repeated accounting and database queries.
- Rated at 65W base power, efficient enough for UPS backup yet strong enough for multi-threaded business software.
- Processor was upgraded from the standard factory configuration before sale, giving you desktop-class speed at a mid-range tower price.
Storage and Memory Configuration
- 8GB of system memory runs Office, a browser and accounting software together for a typical single user.
- Two DIMM slots accept up to 64GB of DDR4-3200, leaving plenty of room for heavier future workloads.
- Adding a second 8GB module enables dual-channel mode, improving speed in large spreadsheets and photo editing.
- 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD shows about 476GB usable once formatted, enough for years of business files.
- NVMe storage boots the system and loads programs in seconds, far faster than the hard drives in older offices.
- Second M.2 slot plus two 3.5-inch bays allow extra SSDs or hard drives for archives and backups.
Graphics Output and External Display Support
- 1GB dedicated graphics card provides display output, since the i5-12400F processor has no built-in graphics.
- Connect your monitor to the graphics card ports, because the motherboard HDMI and VGA stay inactive with this processor.
- Dedicated video memory keeps display work off system RAM, leaving the full 8GB for your applications.
- Handles Full HD office work, YouTube tutorials, Zoom calls and presentation slides comfortably for everyday business use.
- The card occupies the PCIe x16 slot, which can later take a stronger card for design or gaming.
- Suitable for 2D design, POS displays and web systems, but not for modern 3D games or heavy rendering.
Connectivity and Network Support
- Integrated Gigabit Ethernet connects to office switches and fibre routers from Safaricom, Zuku or Faiba at full wired speeds.
- Four front USB-A ports at 5Gbps take flash drives, external disks and scanners within easy reach of the desk.
- Four rear USB 2.0 ports handle keyboard, mouse, printer and receipt printer connections that rarely move.
- Front headphone and microphone combo jack supports wired headsets for Teams, Zoom and Google Meet calls.
- Rear line-in and line-out ports connect desktop speakers or an external audio recorder for training sessions.
- Wi-Fi is not part of this configuration, so use Ethernet or add a USB or PCIe wireless adapter.
Build Quality and Daily Durability
- Tower chassis measures about 15.5 x 30.3 x 33.7cm, fitting under most Kenyan office desks without crowding legroom.
- Weighs about 4.7kg depending on configuration, easy to move between workstations or carry to a branch office.
- One PCIe x1 slot remains free for a serial card, wireless card or network card as needs change.
- Two 3.5-inch drive bays accept large-capacity hard drives for CCTV footage, scanned records or media archives.
- Jet Black business finish suits banking halls, accounts offices and cyber café rows without drawing attention.
- Front-facing ports and vents keep daily use simple and make dust cleaning easy for a technician.
Security Features and Data Protection
- TPM 2.0 security chip meets Windows 11 requirements and supports BitLocker drive encryption for sensitive client files.
- HP Drive Lock protects the storage drive with a password, so a removed drive cannot be read easily.
- Padlock loop and integrated cable lock slot deter theft in cyber cafés, schools and shared offices.
- BIOS passwords stop unauthorised users changing boot order or hardware settings on shared machines.
- DOS delivery lets your IT team install a clean, licensed Windows or Linux image on day one.
- Optional chassis intrusion sensor support alerts IT staff if someone opens the case without authorisation.
