Compatible copies use the same bottle shape and a similar label, which is why buyers get caught out. Check three things before paying: the unbroken carton seal, the hologram shifting colour under light, and the part number matching the label. The GI-490 fits the PIXMA G1400, G2400, G3400 and G4400, plus the G1410, G2410, G3410, G4410 refresh models and the G1411, G2411, G3411 and G4411 regional variants. These are the MegaTank machines Canon sold across Kenya from 2016 onward. It does not fit GI-590, GI-790, GI-40, GI-46 or GI-51 printers, because the bottle nozzle and tank opening differ. Canon rates the 135ml black bottle at up to 6,000 A4 pages using the ISO 5 percent coverage standard, which represents ordinary letters and reports. Real output depends on what you print. Text-heavy documents at 10 percent coverage roughly halve that figure to around 3,000 pages. Dense tables, forms with black backgrounds, and duplicated exam papers pull it lower still. A small office printing 500 pages weekly typically gets close to six months from a single bottle.

Divide KSh 2,350 by 6,000 pages and each black page costs about 39 Kenyan cents. Even at the heavier 10 percent coverage figure of 3,000 pages, you land near 78 cents per sheet. Cartridge printers sit in a different bracket entirely: a KSh 2,000 black cartridge rated for 180 pages costs roughly KSh 11 per page. For a cyber cafe charging KSh 10 per printed page, that difference decides whether the counter turns a profit.

Loose refill ink sold in unmarked bottles is formulated for a general viscosity range, not for the specific nozzle diameter Canon builds into G-series print heads. The common results are banding, faded grey text, and dried pigment blocking nozzles that a cleaning cycle cannot clear. A replacement print head costs more than several genuine bottles. Canon also declines warranty repairs where non-original ink caused the fault, so the KSh 800 you save often becomes a KSh 9,000 repair.

Not without flushing first. Mixing pigment formulations from different suppliers can cause the ink to thicken inside the tank and the feed line, which blocks nozzles faster than either ink would alone. If your printer has been running generic refills, print the tank down as far as is safe, then run one or two cleaning cycles once the GI-490 is in. Switch the printer off, place it on a level surface, and open the black tank cap on the right side of the unit. Hold the GI-490 bottle upright, remove its cap, and seat the nozzle into the tank opening. Ink flows on its own and stops once the tank reaches its upper line, so no squeezing is needed. Reseal both caps, wipe any drips with a dry tissue immediately, and the whole job takes under two minutes.

On most PIXMA G-series models the printer tracks ink electronically and may still show a low-ink warning after a physical refill. Holding the Stop or Resume button for roughly five seconds clears that warning and restarts counting. The exact key combination varies between the G1400, G2400, G3400 and G4400 bodies, so check your manual first. The GI-490 black is pigment-based rather than dye-based, meaning the colour particles sit on and bond to the paper fibres. Text survives highlighter passes, damp fingers, and the humidity along the coast without bleeding. Store sealed bottles upright in a cool spot below 30 degrees Celsius and out of direct sunlight. Canon prints a recommended-use date on each bottle; ink held far past that date can print unevenly and is worth testing before a large job.
